We’re proud of the work we do with our awesome partners, so it’s always nice to be recognized from time to time. This year, we’re happy to say our “Failed VoiceAI Auditions” video collaboration with Dialpad is an official Branded Entertainment, Scripted Video Honoree at the 23rd Webby Awards.
The Webbys can be pretty competitive—they received 13,000 entries from all 50 U.S. states and 70 countries—and it’s been awhile since we’ve found ourselves on the list, so this means a lot. (The last time we received a nomination was in 2013 for our Child of the ‘90s video for Microsoft.)
This project was one of the more unique pieces we worked on last year, and the concept was a little out there, but this proves it pays to take a creative risk.
Behind the Video
When Dialpad needed to promo their new integrated sales AI, we wanted to create a video about AI that took a more lighthearted approach. Column Five Cofounder Josh Ritchie and Dialpad CMO Keith Messick were entertained by the idea of “shitty robots,” so our team took that concept and ran with it.
Thus, the humorous video goes behind the scenes of the casting for Dialpad’s new AI voice. However, instead of using human actors, Dialpad is looking for the perfect robot. Unfortunately, whether it’s human or machine, finding the perfect actor isn’t as easy as it seems.
We want to give a huge shoutout to the Dialpad team for being open to our idea. Thank you to our hilarious actors Chris Smith, Jack De Sena, and Kurt Maloney; the awesome cast and crew (especially the costuming and props); C5 Writer/Producer Ryan Shoe; and Executive Producer Tim Frazier and Director Jonny Zeller from Tapestry Films Creative.
And we’d like to give very a special shoutout to C5 Producer Jonathan Sweet, who was the only person tall enough to fit into the final robot suit (6’4” to be exact).
We also wish the best of luck to the Webby Awards nominees this year. (Make sure to cast your own vote for the People’s Voice Award.) We can’t wait to see who wins.
