Check Out the Native American Translations of 27 State Names

Sure, we may call Iowa the Hawkeye State or Kansas the Sunflower State, but the real meanings behind state names have a history all their own. Many represent the country’s Native American heritage, as either direct translations or permutations of native dialects. When translated, these names reveal interesting insights into indigenous cultures across the country. These were particularly interesting to C5 Art Director Shane Keaney, who decided to do some research to find out which state names have Native American roots.
